Le Morne History
Le Morne Brabant, an iconic cultural landscape of Mauritius, played a crucial role for runaway slaves, known as maroons, in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Protected by its steep slopes and dense forests, they established autonomous communities there. Despite efforts by trackers to dislodge them, the treacherous terrain made these attempts difficult, if not impossible.
After the abolition of slavery in 1835, officers climbed the mountain to announce the news to the maroons. However, some, misinterpreting their intentions, chose to leap from the top of Le Morne rather than return to slavery.
Today, Le Morne Brabant stands as a symbol of the struggles and sacrifices made by slaves for their freedom. The Valley of Bones, a testament to these tragic events, is now a place of reflection.
